IBM Power7 Chip on Ramp

International Business Machine (IBM) is unveiling new saver system today (i.e. Monday, Feb.8, 2010) at an event in New York City. Competitions are there for IBM’s new Power7 Processor. Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Intel also expected to release their next generation version of the Itanium Processor. In an interview, a Pund-IT Research analyst, Charles King said, ““We’re seeing three very big vendors … sharpening their elbows a bit,”

However, IBM officials are very much confident about their Power7 Processor. In an interview, Scott Handy, the vice president of IBM Power System Platform said, “We view the Unix market as very, very robust and mission-critical, and with [the Power7] platform, we have a perfect spot in the market,”

IBM new Power7 Processor is specially designed for certain projects like analyzing financial stuffs, managing electrical grids and processing cancer research data. This Power7 server system made of integrated servers, storage and software and so on.

When compared to Power6 processors of IBM, these Power7 processors will deport better performance and capabilities (its virtualization capability is very much strong and powerful as it supports almost 1,000 virtual servers at one physical host).

One of the most distinguished aspects of IBM Power7 servers is it costs the same price of Power6 processors but Power7 consumes half the energy of Power6. For instance, when compared to its predecessor (Power6), Power7 servers are four times faster and the Power7 chip consists of eight processing cores that help to support 32 threads and each cores of Power7 chip is extremely powerful.

IBM inserts series of new features in Power7 System and one of the most distinguished one is it uses a latest technology called TurboCore and the other distinguished feature is “Intelligent Energy” that supports to minimize the power consumption up to 90 percentages.

IBM Power7 system was under the testing process since August and the experts were testing projects like cancer research process with Texas Medical Center. The testing come out with the good result with the advantages of speed, memory and other performance of chip.

There are totally four new Power7 server models are in ramp that cut the data energy prices. The four models of Power7 server are – Power 750 Express, Power 755, Power 770 and Power 780. Among all the four Power7 servers, the first two servers shipping will start from February 19 and the last two Power7 Servers shipping will start on March 7.
