The 918 Spyder will be equipped with a plug-in hybrid power-train

The power train t consists of two electric motors located on the front and rear axle with a combined output of 218 HP and a 3.4L V8 gasoline engine which is mid-mounted and could develop 500 HP.

The car will have estimated total power output of 718 HP

The  hybrid power-train in  the Porsche 918 should be able to sprint from 0 to 62 MPH in just 3.2 seconds and it could reach a top speed of 198 MPH. Porsche claims this hybrid super-car will return a fuel consumption of 78 mpg with a CO2 emissions level of just 79 g/km.

“In its session today, the Supervisory Board of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, gave the green light for series development of the Porsche 918 Spyder. Reflecting the overwhelming response from the public and customers to the Concept Study, the Supervisory Board gave Porsche’s Board of Management the mission to develop a production model based on the car already presented. This concept version of an ultra-high-performance mid-engined sports car with plug-in hybrid technology made its debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show and at Auto China in Bejing, hitting the headlines worldwide. Michael Macht, President and Chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche AG: “Production of the 918 Spyder in a limited series proves that we are taking the right approach with Porsche Intelligent Performance featuring the combination of supreme performance and efficient drivetrain concepts. We will develop the 918 Spyder in Weissach and assemble it in Zuffenhausen. This is also a very important commitment to Germany as a manufacturing base.” The Concept Study of the 918 Spyder allows CO2 emissions of just 70 g/km, corresponding to fuel consumption of 3.0 litre/100 km (94.1 mpg imp) in the NEDC, on the one hand, and the performance of a super-sports car, on the other. This extremely efficient drivetrain technology then forms a symbiosis in the 918 Spyder with truly outstanding design and high-tech motorsport achievements. The phytoplanktons are declining at a rate of 1% per year as a result of rising temperatures of water bodies. The research was written in the journal Nature by scientist who made their finding by looking at records of the transparency of sea water. The transparency reduces by the presence of planktons.

In a first of kinds study to note the global changes over a long time frame the scientist made these observations. These very tiny marine beings form the first part in the food chain. A typical marine food chain proceeds as phytoplankton – zooplankton – tiny marine animals – which are prey for small fish and then other larger animals. Thus even a small decrease in the number of these tiny species is a cause of great concern as it may disrupt the food chain and eventually the ecological balance.

Even though various substances in the water can reduce its transparency but one the main ones is the concentration of chlorophyll. This is the green pigment that is key to photosynthesis in plants at sea and on land and is also present in the phytoplankton that cover most of the surface of the oceans.

The global study took three years to finish and were done taking the help of satellite measurements to find out the color of the oceans. The higher quality data available since 1950 using  earlier shipboard analysis of water samples and recently the images from satellites the team has calculated that since that time, the world has seen a phytoplankton decline of about 40%.

Even though most of the regions around the world show a decline in the population of planktons, the results are not steady. There are exceptions where the population has on the contrary increased. One of such regions is the Indian ocean.  Increases are also seen in the coastal zones where fertiliser run-off from agricultural land is increasing nutrient supplies and hence fuelling the increase in their population. The growth of planktons is directly correlated to the temperatures of the water. The warmer ends of water cycles co-incide with a reduction in plankton growth, while abundance is seen higher in the colder regions of water.

Another factor affecting the population of these marine animals can be the huge expansion in open-ocean fishing that has taken place over the century.

Head of the marine programme at the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Carl-Gustaf Lundin, said “Logically you would expect that as fishing has gone up, the amount of zooplankton would have risen – and that should have led to a decline in phytoplankton,”

Whatever the reasons be the presence of these is very essential for the marine ecology. They keeps the oxygen balance of oceans as well, because Photosynthesis by phytoplankton removes carbon dioxide from the air and produces oxygen.

The decrease in their numbers could also further accelerate the warming of temperatures.
